This stamp commemorates the riders of the Pony Express which ran between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California, from April, 1860, to October, 1861. It shows a post horse and rider. This was the first US stamp to depict an actual historic event.

Though the Express was a popular service, this pictorial series of stamps was not. People complained about the size and some of the subjects of the stamps.
