Exhibitions and Expositions
This stamp commemorates Columbus by showing his fleet – the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. It is part of the Columbian Exposition set.
The 2c stamp in the Columbian Exposition set depicts the landing of Columbus in the Americas. This, not the 1c Columbian, is the least valuable stamp in the set – probably because it was the normal postal rate of the day.
The first in the commemorative set for the 1893 Columbian Exposition, this 1c stamp shows Columbus in sight of land. The World’s Columbian Exposition was held in Chicago, Illinois, from May 1 through October 30, 1893. It celebrated the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the Americas by Columbus.
